Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes Forums Next Major Update Preview - Mods
EA_JesseEA_Jesse 7:34AM edited 7:42AM in Developer Updates The next major update for Star Wars™: Galaxy of Heroes will unlock a new feature called Mods! Mods are a new progression system for Characters level 50 and above. Mods will allow you to enhance and customize your Characters’ stats in a way never before seen at the holotables!

What are Mods? Mods are a new type of item that allow you to customize the stats of the character to which they are equipped. A character can equip up to 6 different Mods at once and each one will add stats to that character.

Mods come in 6 different shapes, and you can assign one of each shape to a given Character. Mods affect a Primary stat (for example, Health) and may also affect additional Secondary stats once the Mod is leveled up.
We'll be sharing more information about Mods and our next major update in the coming days. In addition to Mods, we'll be adding even more features, as well as fixing a large number of bugs. Post edited by EA_Jesse at 7:42AM Flag Quote

Oooh sounds good, more exciting strategies! Although I would imagine it would be confusing as hell when it's first introduced.

Modifications is a common system used in these types of games. So, for anyone that hasn't used this system before, I'll post my experiences with it while playing other games. Most of this experience is from Summoner Wars as that's my most played game that uses this type of system.
So! As the official post from Jesse states, there will be six slots per character in which you can equip these mods. Like the runes in Summoner Wars, these mods will be of certain shapes. You have to match these shapes with the correct slot in order to equip. You won't be able to equip two mods of the same shape. This is to help keep some balance and to keep you from stacking all mods into one stat.
Each mod will give a primary stat bonuses, and gain secondary stats as they are level'd. To level a mod in other games, you spend resources and have a chance for the mod to either gain a level or fail. In Summoner Wars, if you fail you keep your mod but lose the resources spent in order to make the attempt. You can spend real money to increase your odds.
As far as I know, EA/CG has not talked about this. In other games, there are set bonuses for equipping mods of the same name or brand. In Summoner Wars, if you equip 2 runes from the Energy set, you get a health bonuses on top of the other stats the mods provide. This is to reward players of a certain playstyle. So, if you want a really bulky character, you'll have higher mod bonuses since you equipped 6 defense mods and got the additional +50 defense, rather than someone that only equipped two defense mods and didn't get that bonus. Sometimes in Summoner Wars, you'll equip a rune that doesn't provide the best stat gain but will give you the set bonus that makes it worth it.
I'm not saying this is 100% how it will work in SWGOH. I'm only sharing what I know from other games that play the same way as SWGOH so that you can plan ahead and consider what this means for your team.
Personally, I think this is a fun addition. BUT! At first it may seem like it will add some depth and uniqueness to your character. Know that in Summoner Wars, there is a right and wrong way to use them. Meta teams will remain meta by using the right mods. Generally, this means furthering a character's strength. So, Rey will likely be equipping mods that further her damage and speed. Sure, you can put defensive runes on her. But, it's likely to have such little impact on her since she's already so frail that it would be a waste. If you don't use a meta team, you tend have more options.
Using Nightsisters as an example, Asajj would benefit greatly from Speed or Damage mods. She'd benefit even further for speed and damage mods that also increase potency. How you mix those mods will have a noticeable impact on her play. She's very slow, so adding speed is going to help either keep up as everyone else gets quicker or possible start to outspeed others that aren't stacking speed. Damage helps her Endless Wrath to score a kill that you may not have gotten if you only had two damage mods instead of four. Have potency has the secondary stats on mods will help increase her chance to stun on her basic, so you'll be trying to find the mods that allow that while still giving beneficial stats.
