"Then you would have been weak, unworthy of being a Dark Lord of the Sith. And, you would have deserved to die." - Zannah
(I couldn't find a good picture with a good size...)
How Did Zannah come to be a Darth of the Dark Side?
Zannah was a human female born on the planet Somov Rit during 1010 BBY (Old Republic Era). She was given the nickname of "Rain". Zannah was gifted in the force at a very young age. Though, she was naturally gifted in the ability to hide her force presence. When a Jedi (Torr Snapit) visited her homeworld to seek force sensitive recruits for the Army of Light, he didn't initially want to recruit due to her hiding her ability, naturally. But, Rain didn't want to be left behind as her cousins were leaving to join. Zannah then manipulated the Jedi in to thinking she was a worthy candidate and was taken along with her cousins to train and fight on the planet Ruusan. Before they could land, their ship was attacked by the Brotherhood of Darkness. During the attack, Zannah fell from a hole blown into the hull of the shuttle, tumbling to the surface. Unable to sense her presence, she was thought dead and left. But, she had survived the fall! She landed on a Bouncer (creatures native to the planet, force sensitive) named Laa. This creature became her bestfriend and she became a wild child. For some time, they traveled together as scavengers on the war-torn planet.
During the conflict, the Sith in the Brotherhood of Darkness created a powerful Force Storm (Darth Sidious is the only Sith capable of doing this alone!) by means of a ritual, devastating a portion of the planet. Zannah felt the force abnormally, instantly created a shield around herself and her Bouncer ally that allowed them to survive what had wiped out many Jedi. It was during this moment that Rain understood what the Force was and her mind filled with aspirations to become a Jedi Knight like her cousins. But, Laa the Bouncer knew this was not Zannah's fate. Laa told Zannah that her destiny was not to be a force of the Light, but an agent of Darkness. Extremely upset with this news, the young girl attempted suicide by jumping from a cliff. The Force wouldn't let her die, levitating herself before hitting the hard ground. Zannah had decided that she would prove her friend's predictions wrong and become a Jedi and that her fate was her own.
Zannah continued to travel with her companion. She wanted Laa to see the day she became a great Jedi! The conflict on the planet ensued, however. Being force sensitive to their own planet, the Bouncer's were driven into madness by the large-scale destruction and death. Their minds were filled with pain and transmitted through out the force, causing pain for the Army of Light. The Jedi decided it was best to slay the creatures (not the best times for Jedi) else they would risk their own fall to the dark side and lose the war. With Zannah cloaked by the Force, she ride on top of Laa as they traveled. Two Jedi killed Laa, tossing Zannah to the ground. She began to cry, anger and hate overcoming her. She then snapped the necks of the two Jedi that had killed her friend (who, wasn't overtaken by madness). This was Zannah's first steps to the Dark Side of the Force, just as Laa had predicted.
Zannah's sudden outburst grabbed the attention of Darth Bane. He found her and made her his apprentice, abandoning the nickname Rain. Convinced she was a killer, she looked up to Darth Bane and followed him. Shortly after, a Lord known as Skere Kaan (A former Jedi Master, now Sith) unleashed his Thought Bomb that destroyed most Jedi and Sith on the planet. Darth Bane and Zannah survived and hid inside a cave. Later, a childhood friend of Zannah appeared in the cave. Thinking she was a captive of Darth Bane (who was a traitor marked by the Brotherhood of Darkness), Darovit ignited his lightsaber to free her. Zannah used the force to explode the boy's hand, leaving him in the cave as they left.
Zannah as a Sith
Zannah trained under Darth Bane (creator of Rule of Two). She studied in a rare form of the Dark Side known as Sith Sorcery. Many of her teachings came from Freedon Nad's holocron, already becoming a master at the age of fourteen. Darth Bane didn't understand Sith Sorcery, he was a brute. Zannah's mastery over it complimented Bane well, allowing him to performs feats he wouldn't normally be able to do. Once, Darth Bane and Zannah were able to walk freely in a Jedi Temple under the guise that Zannah created for them, hiding their dark presence. Darth Zannah became an extension of the Dark Lord Bane, acting as an assassin and as his intel. She would use her ability in sorcery to manipulate politicians to make ploys of Bane's device or to commit suicide. Whenever she was captured (maybe on purpose), she convinced a Chiss to gouge out her own eyes. There was little defense against sorcery at the time (Yoda would be a great cause to protection from this), essentially giving Zannah free reign to control those around her. She was remorseless, though wasn't against leaving someone alive if she felt it was pointless to kill them. Not that she spared many! She also took an apprentice named Hetton, but only to use him. He had knowledge on creating Sith Holocrons, something that greatly fascinated Zannah and something Darth Bane wanted to know.
Zannah took Hetton and his assassins to attack Darth Bane, following the Rule of Two. Though, as the assassins attacked (and Hetton), Zannah only watched as they were slaughtered was ease. Though Darth Bane turned on her after killing the attackers, she was able to convince Bane that it was all part of her plan to obtain Hetton's knowledge and dispose of him. But, not after being beaten by Bane. Later, she infiltrated the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Her intentions were to study in their library in hopes to finding information about Darth Bane's obalisk armor. After a week of hiding her dark aura with sith sorcery, she lost control over it during a moment of excitement when she found the answers she seek. Darovit (boy from cave) noticed Zannah at that point. Angry that the boy warned the Jedi of the return of the Sith, she kidnapped Darovit and they travel'd to her master. On the trip, she force chocked Darovit to near death because she was annoyed at his attempts to sway her to the Light.
But, the Jedi had follow'd her ship to Tython and her master. Five Jedi Masters followed Zannah and Bane into the fortress, battling in a circular room by Bane's plan. During the fight, the Jedi found it impossible to get passed Zannah's defense. It took the overwhelming strength of one Jedi's size and being empowered by another Jedi's Force Meditation to cause Zannah to slightly falter, but not break. During the battle, the Jedi that empowered the other that was attacking Zannah broke his concentration, allowing Zannah the second she needed. She flooded the Jedi's mind with horror and fear, causing the Jedi to go mad and flail about in terror. Cutting him down, she cloaked her presence in the Force and moved behind a Jedi that was dueling with Bane and stabbed her through the gut. The Jedi that remained were taken back by the loss, being cut down by Bane. Darth Bane would then get trapped in a force bubble created by one of the Jedi Masters, forcing Bane's lightning attack to hit himself (an the master) instead of his original target. This left Bane mortally wounded. Lots of stuff happened that resulted in Zannah needing to rebuild the Sith.
Getting a bit winded! I'll try to shorten things. Now a Darth, Zannah took an apprentice named Set Hartth. He didn't want to, but fear'd for his life. She then later duel'd Bane. During their duel, a lightning attack from Bane brought the building down, prematurely ending their duel. They later duel'd again on Ambria at Caleb's (a healer that was now dead) camp. Zannah knew the reason, to finish the duel. It was there she met Cognus, Bane's knew apprentice. Cognus swore loyalty to whoever won. Bane's attacks were powerful, pushing Zannah back as she loss ground with each of his powerful blows. Knowing she was greatly outclassed by Bane's lightsaber skills, she began to focus on her sorcery. During this, she tripped over a new grave that was dug by Cognus. Bane took this chance, hilting his saber and resorting to use his massive strength to punch and kick Zannah. One of her ribs cracked under the brutal assault before she was able to duck away. She was exhausted, her acrobatic attempts to flee from his assault and being wounded. Zannah created a Force Terror to attack Bane, driving him mad. But, Bane wasn't fool'd. He destroyed the hallucination. She then used the natural flow of dark energy to create tendrils from the ground. These tendrils were essentially lightsabers, able to cut flesh with ease. Bane dodged the tendrils as he ran towards Zannah, determined to cut her down for good. Sweeping her off her feet, it looked as if Bane had won. Before he could deliver the killing blow, a tendril came from behind and cut off his arm. In a desperate ploy, Bane attempted to transfer his mind into Zannah. But, her superior mind won the battle of thoughts. Zannah then took Cognus as her apprentice, leaving Bane's body but taking his lightsaber.
Darth Zannah's Lightsaber - Bane's Heart
Zannah built her custom saber when she was fourteen. It was a double-bladed saber with a hilt that was longer than usual. The crystal used was Bane's Heart, giving the lightsaber it's name. Darth Zannah was trained in the form of Soresu, a defensive lightsaber stance. The longer hilt allowed more control so that Zannah could focus more on her sorcery during combat. She was also one of the few left handed fighters! Years after her death by her apprentice, Bane's Heart would be owned by General Grevious.
Sith Sorcery
I won't go into too much detail. This was Zannah's greatest strength. Not many Sith practice sorcery, and even fewer were as skilled as Darth Zannah. To be able to use sorcery, you have to have a near romantic relationship with the Force. Sorcery allows those who are gifted in it to heal others, create hallucinations, induce pain and terror in someone's mind, warp reality, drain life, memory alteration, and other feats. This is a different side of the Force! Though it drives on negative emotions, it is different from Force Lightning and Choke. Females that used sorcery were called Witches. It's more like being a mage/priest class in fantasy. Sorcerers and Witches also possessed extensive knowledge on alchemy and knowledge of the Force. There was often little defense against this form of the Force since it pulled for it's own source. Many Sith (and Jedi) artifacts were created through sorcery. It's thought that the Rakghoul plague was created with Sith sorcery.
Fun Fact! Darth Zannah was originally portrayed as a male by Lucas!
