Let's clarify how combat missions relate to the rest of the game modes in Territory Battles.
The Basics
The ultimate goal in TB is to rack up as many stars as possible, which gets us better loot at the end. Stars are awarded according to the number of points earned in every territory of every phase. So what gets us the most points for our buck (directly or indirectly)? Generally speaking:
Platoons > Combat Missions > Final Deployments
Platoons are most important (and should be done first) because they contribute points both directly (there's a bonus for completing each platoon) and indirectly (completed platoons give the guild power-up abilities for future missions, which helps us all complete more combat missions).
Combat Missions, meanwhile, are more important than Final Deployments because each combat mission round awards a LOT of extra TB points, EVEN if you only complete, say, 2 rounds out of 6 for a mission. So it's always worth the effort to give them a try!
Final Deployment should be made AFTER you've assigned all you need to assign in platoons and AFTER you've run all your combat missions in all territories. At that point, make sure you check the current guidance in the TB Announcements channel (or ask an officer) about where to deploy your roster, and do so.
Why We Do Things The Way We Do
Because there are multiple ways to earn TB points in a phase, the officers need to figure out the number of points we're likely to get from combat, platoons AND final deployments and see how many stars we can get. This is a constantly moving target, but have several tools at our disposition to make a determination.
Please DO NOT simply deploy in a random territory, or in a territory where it currently seems where we're close to the next star, etc. The officers keep a very close eye on these things and have very good reasons for asking people to deploy in a specific territory, even if it seems like it's the "wrong" one. For example, we keep track of how many players have the necessary toons to attempt a mission (i.e. how many players have HRScout for a mission that requires it), how many players have already attempted the mission, etc. So we have a good idea of how many more points we can potentially earn in a given territory just from combat missions. Furthermore, we privately ask a few specific players to hold back their final deployment to give us a margin of error in case things get hairy towards the end. So it's very important that you check the guidance in TB channel and deploy in the right territory -- it can mean the difference between getting that third star or not.
NOTE: Special Missions
Special Missions are combat missions that do NOT award TB points, and as such don't contribute toward our star total. However, they are extremely important to complete because they award goodies TO THE ENTIRE GUILD such as ROLO shards or TB Store tokens. For example, completing the ROLO mission in phase 3 awards 1 ROLO shard -- not just to you, but to every member of the guild!
There is one Special Mission in every phase, so please give them a go -- the whole guild benefits from your efforts!
